What is the Microsoft Sticky Notes App?

Sticky Notes is a note-taking app that comes with Windows 11. This app creates sticky notes with typed text, images, and recognized URLs. Choose from several customization options, such as seven different colors of sticky notes and a "Dark" mode for the app.
 
 

How to Open the Sticky Notes App

 

How to Open the Sticky Notes App With Search

  • Step 1: Go down to the taskbar and click Start (four blue squares).

The computer screen displays the Desktop. At the bottom left of the Desktop, the cursor clicks the Start button (four blue squares).

  • Step 2: In the Start window click in the search bar at the top and type "sticky notes".

  • Step 3: On the results screen, click one of the following to open the Sticky Notes app:

-On the left side under "Best match", click "Sticky Notes App".

-On the right side click "Sticky Notes App".

-On the middle right side, click "Open".

How to Pin the Sticky Notes App to the Taskbar With Right Click

  • Step 1: Open the Sticky Notes app. Go down to the taskbar and right click the Sticky Notes app icon.

The computer screen displays the opened Sticky Notes app. The cursor right clicks the Sticky Notes app on the taskbar at the bottom of the computer screen.

  • Step 2: In the menu that opens, click "Pin to taskbar".

A menu appears above the Sticky Notes app icon. In the menu, the cursor clicks "Pin to taskbar".
 

  • Step 3: Either click the pinned Sticky Notes app icon, or right click the pinned icon and in the menu that opens, click "Sticky Notes" to open the app.

How to Open a Sticky Note With Hover

  • Step 1: Open the Sticky Notes app. Go down to the taskbar and hover the mouse over the Sticky Notes app icon.

  • Step 2: Two windows appear (one is the Notes list and the other is the sticky note). Click the sticky note window to open the sticky note.

  • Step 1: Open or pin the Sticky Notes app to the taskbar. Go down to the taskbar and right click the Sticky Notes app icon.

How to Resize the Sticky Notes App Window With Mouse

  • Step 2: After the cursor becomes a double sided arrow, click, hold, and drag the mouse to resize the window. Release the mouse to stop resizing the window.

How to Minimize the Sticky Notes App With Keyboard Shortcut

  • Step 1: After opening the Sticky Notes app, on the keyboard press Ctrl + O. Both the Notes list and any sticky notes minimize and do not display on the computer screen.

How to Restore the Sticky Notes App With Double Click

  • Step 1: First maximize either the Notes list or a sticky note. Double click the top of the maximized window. The window is restored to its default size before being maximized.

  • Step 1: First minimize all windows. Go down to the taskbar and right click the Sticky Notes app icon.

How to Change the Sticky Notes App Theme Color With Right Click

  • Step 1: Go down to the taskbar and right click either the open or pinned Sticky Notes app icon.

  • Step 2: In the menu that opens, click "Settings".

How to Create a Sticky Note With Keyboard Shortcut

  • Step 1: First open the Sticky Notes app, click inside either the Notes list or a sticky note, and on the keyboard press Ctrl + N.

How to Change the Color of a Sticky Note

  • Step 1: Open a sticky note and click the "Menu" or "..." button in the upper right.

  • Step 2: In the menu that opens, click one of the colors at the top to switch to that color.

How to Select Text With Keyboard

  • Step 1: Type any text inside a sticky note. On the keyboard hold Shift and press or hold the arrow keys to select the text.

  • Step 1: Edit a sticky note and on the keyboard press Ctrl + A.

How to Delete Text With Keyboard

  • Step 1: Edit a sticky note and select any text. On the keyboard press Delete.

How to Format Text With Click

  • Step 2: At the bottom of the sticky note, click one of the formatting buttons to add or remove that formatting.

  • Step 1: Edit a sticky note, select any text, and on the keyboard press Ctrl + C.

  • Step 2: In the "Open" window that opens, click an image to insert and click the "Open" button.

How to View an Image With Double Click

How to Resize the View Window

  • Step 1: First view an image in a sticky note. Hover the mouse over any edge or corner of the view window, until the cursor becomes a double sided arrow. Click, hold, and drag the mouse to resize the View window. Release the mouse to stop resizing the view window.

  • Step 1: View an image in a sticky note. Double click the top of the View window to maximize it.

How to Close the View Window

  • Step 1: First view an image in a sticky note. Go to the upper right corner of the View window and click the "Close" or "X" button.

How to Save an Image With Right Click

The cursor right clicks the image in the sticky note.

 

 

  • Step 2: In the menu that opens, click "Save to device".

  • Step 3: In the "Save As" window that opens, type any text to name the file and click "Save".
In the "Save As" window, a blue rectangle surrounds the "File name:" field that displays "example1". The cursor clicks the "Save" button at the bottom of the window.




How to Open a Sticky Note Image in Photos

  • Step 1: View an image. Go to the upper right of the View window and click the "Menu" or "..." button.

  • Step 2: In the menu that opens, click "Open in Photos".

How to Edit the Description of a Sticky Note Image

  • Step 1: First view an image. Go to the upper right of the View window and click the "Menu" or "..." button.

  • Step 2: In the menu that opens, click "Edit description".

A menu appears in the upper right of the View window. The cursor clicks the "Edit description" option in the menu.

 

  • Step 3: Type any text and click "Done".

How to Remove the Description of a Sticky Note Image

  • Step 1: View an image. Go to the upper right of the View window and click the "Menu" or "..." button. The cursor clicks the "Menu" or "..." button in the upper right of the View window.

 

  • Step 2: In the menu that opens, click "Edit description".

A menu appears in the upper right of the View window. The cursor clicks the "Edit description" option in the menu.

 

  • Step 3: Click the "X" button and click "Done".

How to Delete an Image With Right Click

  • Step 1: Add an image to a sticky note. Open that sticky note and right click the image.

  • Step 2: In the menu that opens, click "Delete" image and click "Delete".

How to Enable Insights on a Sticky Note

  • Step 1: Open the Notes list. Go to the upper right of the Notes list and click "Settings" or the gear button.

  • Step 2: In the Sticky Notes Settings window that opens, click under the "Enable Insights" section to toggle this option on.

How to Turn "Confirm before deleting" Off With Settings

  • Step 1: First open the Notes list. Go to the upper right of the Notes list and click "Settings" or the gear button.

  • Step 2: In the Sticky Notes Settings window that opens, click under the "Confirm before deleting" section to toggle this option off.

How to Cycle Backwards Through All Windows

  • Step 1: Open the Notes list. Go to the upper left click the "New note" or "+" button to create at least one sticky note.

How to Clear the Search Bar With Click

  • Step 1: Click the "X" button on the right side of the search bar.

How to Exit the Search Bar With Click

How to Move One Word to the Left

  • Step 1: Click inside an edited sticky note. On the keyboard press Ctrl + Left Arrow key to move the insertion point, or blinking vertical line, one word to the left. Continue pressing Ctrl + Left Arrow key to continue moving one word to the left.
